The world's first dog to have been found to have an "active infection" of the coronavirus in Hong Kong died after recovering and returning home.
According to information published by the South China Morning Post, the pet has been in quarantine since February 26 and underwent five tests that yielded "weak positive" results for the new virus.
The pomeranian was discharged after he finally tested negative on Saturday, but died two days later at his owner's home - a 60-year-old lady who was also infected but had already recovered.
The puppy was 17 years old, an advanced age for his breed, and suffered from other underlying diseases so he did not die from the coronavirus, the newspaper reported.
"The Chinese Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation (AFCD) revealed that they learned of the news from the dog's owner and that she had been told that she was unwilling to [allow] an autopsy to examine the cause of death.", the China Post reported.
Professor and clinical virologist Malik Peiris confirmed that the puppy had an "active infection" and that it produced numerous positive tests, albeit in low amounts of the virus, over a period of 12 days after being removed from its owner's house.
The U. S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) explains that there is no evidence yet that pets are a source of infection for humans. However, he indicates that they can carry germs that can make people sick, so "it is always a good idea to practice healthy habits."
On its website, the institution recommends washing hands before and after touching animals, their food or waste; maintain good hygiene at home and take pets regularly to the vet.
