Krystle Villanueva, a 27-year-old mother, was sentenced to life in prison for the brutal murder of her 5-year-old daughter. The mother was found guilty of killing Giovanna Hernández, who was discovered stabbed and mutilated at her Texas home. The mother was arrested on January 5, 2017 and recently received the jury's verdict.
"I have been doing this type of work for over 43 years and have worked as a homicide detective for 11 years and this is one of the worst cases I have ever seen," Hays County Sheriff Gary Cutler told the Austin American newspaper- Statesman.
The girl's grandfather, Eustorgio Arellano, called 911 and told police that Krystle attacked him from behind without explanation, stabbing him in the head and back, according to testimony released by the Hays County District Attorney's office.. The man left the house but left his granddaughter and Krystle inside. A SWAT team and a hostage negotiator went to the house. Villanueva called 911 from his home and confessed to police that he had killed his daughter because "she asked for cereal," according to a statement from authorities.
When investigators forcibly entered the home they found the newly bathed and naked woman in a room. Her daughter was in another room "stabbed and beheaded". The mother's lawyers asked the jury not to find her guilty because Krystle suffered from mental problems and was not in her right mind when she committed the crime.

"Villanueva argued that at the time of the attacks, she was delusional and believed that her daughter and father-in-law had been replaced by clones and had to be killed to bring their true relatives back to earth," a statement from the authorities.
The jury denied that the mother was crazy and found her guilty of murdering her daughter and attacking her father-in-law with a lethal weapon. Hays County Criminal Prosecutor Wes Mau said all the officers who had worked on this case had been "traumatized for life" by witnessing what this mother had done to her daughter.
