The photograph of the corpse of a man abandoned on a chillingly deserted street in Wuhan City, epicenter of the outbreak of the fearsome coronavirus, is going around the world.

The portrait shows an old man whose lifeless body lies on the sidewalk in front of a locked furniture store, his face is still covered with a blue mask. According to the AFP agency, which published the portrait, although few passers-by venture to leave, some passed in front of the body, but no one dared to touch it.

The image was captured by the photographer Héctor Retamal for the aforementioned agency and has caused a stir by demonstrating the terror that reigns in the streets of that city, located in the province of Hubei, due to the epidemic that has already claimed more than 200 lives and infected to more than 9,800 people inside and outside China.

The photographer managed to capture the moment when medical personnel arrived at the scene to cover the body with a blue blanket and then transfer him in an ambulance.

Although it is not clear if the person died or not from the coronavirus, the circumstances captured in the photographic sequence attest to what is lived inside Wuhan. This city of 11 million inhabitants has been sealed to the outside of the world after the outbreak emerged in mid-December.

According to multiple sources, the virus would have passed from one animal (possibly a type of bat) to another (possibly a snake) and from there jumped into a human container. The disease is believed to have arisen in a local market that sells different types of seafood and animal foods.

Still, the Wuhan coronavirus is a mysterious microorganism and little is known about it. There are no vaccines against him, nor has it been well established who is most exposed to it, although many of the deceased are men and the elderly.
