Who said that the Mexican soap opera has died? Melodrama as a television genre is more alive than ever. This is demonstrated by the recent success of the new version of La usurpadora in Hispanic prime time. The fiction starring actress and singer Sandra Echeverría, which Univision premiered on September 16 with great audience success, closed its broadcasts last October 18 in style after five weeks on the air.
The plot also led by Andrés Palacios and Arap Bethke said goodbye as the leading Hispanic prime time program after averaging 1.8 million viewers (P2 +) and nearly 800,000 viewers among adults 18-49 years old during its last episode.
The fiction managed to gather in its outcome more viewers in front of the screen than The Lord of the Skies. The ambitious Telemundo superset starring Matías Novoa and Isabella Castillo seduced an hour later, at 10 pm Eastern time, just over 1.5 million viewers (P2 +), approximately 300 thousand viewers less than The usurper; although in the demographic group 18-49 years, it was imposed by the minimum to the Univision soap opera, according to Nielsen data released by PRODU.
P2 +
1. The usurper: 1.8 M
2. The Lord of the Skies: 1.5M
A18-49
1. The lord of heaven: 803 thousand
2. The usurper: 790 thousand
The success of La usurpadora was reflected during the five weeks that the Televisa production aired. In total, the telenovela averaged over its 25 episodes 1.7 million total viewers (P2 +), 721,000 adults 18-49 years old and 305,000 adults 18-34, which led the Spanish-speaking network to comfortably lead Monday through Friday the Time slot at 9 pm Eastern time, compared to Telemundo in the three key demographic groups.
The modernized version of the story that more than 20 years ago catapulted Venezuelan actress Gaby Spanic to fame became, in addition, Univision's primetime soap opera / series with primetime viewing for adults 18-49 years old from My Husband It has a family, fiction that the chain transmitted in 2017 with Zuria Vega and Daniel Arenas as protagonists.
Univision now hopes to repeat the success of La usurpadora con Cuna de lobos, another Televisa classic that landed last Monday, October 21 in Hispanic prime time.
Cuna de lobos tells the story of Catalina Creel (Paz Vega), a woman obsessed with power who will be capable of everything, including killing, in order to have it.
The fiction airs at 9 pm ET on Univision.
