A nine-year-old boy has been charged with first-degree multiple murder in the deaths of five people who were burned to death inside a mobile home in Peoria, Illinois. The five deceased are relatives of the boy, two of them were adults and three were children and now the mother of the suspect defends her, assuring that her son is not "a monster".

The events date back to April 6 when the victims died in the parked house that was parked at the Timberline Mobile Home Park in Goodfield, southwest of Chicago.

The investigations carried out after the fire determined that Daemeon and Ariel Wall, aged two and one, respectively, died, respectively, Kathryn Murray, 69, Jason Wall, 34 and the girl Rose Alwood, 2. The fire, Coroner Tim Ruestman assured, it was provoked "on fire".

The fire started around 11:00 pm that night and the flames were so intense that although the neighbors heard the family making horrible screams for help, no one was able to enter to rescue them. Incredibly, Katrina Alwood and her son Kyle, then 8 years old, were the only ones who could escape the hell that formed in the house. Now the minor has been singled out as the suspect in the multiple murder.

"Everyone looks at him like he's a kind of monster, but that's not him," Alwood told CBS television cameras to speak about the accusations now weighing on his son. "People make mistakes and this is what this is. Yes, it was a horrible tragedy, but it's still not something to ruin your life for.”

Accusing such a young child of multiple murder was a difficult decision for prosecutors, according to the AP agency. No such young child had been charged with mass murder since 2006. “It is a tragedy, we are accusing a very young person of one of the most serious crimes we have. But I think it needs to be done,”said Greg Minger, Goodfield District Attorney whose task now is to prove that the boy intentionally killed his relatives. Now, prosecutors must prove that the child intended to kill in advance,"

Despite the seriousness of the charges, the boy has not been detained, as Illinois law prohibits the arrest of children under the age of 10. If found guilty, the minor could be sentenced to five years on probation under the condition of undergoing emotional rehabilitation therapy.

"I also lost my family, you know?" Exclaimed the boy's mother. "But I forgive him. I love him despite everything.” Little Kyle has a court date this October 21.
