Óscar Arias Sánchez, former president of Costa Rica and winner of the Nobel Peace Prize in 1987, has become the protagonist of a great controversy after a psychiatrist accused him of having sexually abused her in 2014.

In the accusations, made by Dr. Alexandra Arce von Herold, it is claimed that the incident in question occurred at the home of the 78-year-old Costa Rican leader, during a meeting scheduled to plan the trip to an event in which they would participate in the city of Vienna, Austria.

As revealed by The New York Times newspaper through a report on its online site, Arce detailed in his lawsuit that being at Arias Sánchez's residence, he “took her from behind, stroked her chest and put his hands in her skirt, and then penetrate it with her fingers”.

The strong accusations have undoubtedly generated a whole controversy against one of the most influential men in Central America and who, through his legal team, sent his comments on the case to the renowned American newspaper.

"I categorically deny the accusations being made against me … I have never acted in a disrespectful manner against the will of a woman," said the ex-president of Costa Rica.

In statements delivered by Arce von Herold, the decision to go public with his complaints was inspired by the Me Too movement, which has exposed the sexual abuse of renowned names such as film producer Harvey Weinstein, actor Bill Cosby and the team doctor. United States Gymnastics Olympian Larry Nassar.

The Times report adds that, after the alleged abuse, the psychiatrist confessed what happened to more than a dozen people, including a congressman and her boyfriend, who have ratified the state of shock in which the event left the doctor.
