A 4-year-old Texas boy is now in preventive custody after being rescued from a house where drugs were allegedly made and believed to have been forced to live in a closet - with rats and cockroaches infesting the only visitors. House in ruins.

The court-appointed attorney to represent the boy's interests told People magazine that the boy told authorities they found him that those pests were "his friends."

"Given the circumstances, he is fine," said Rachel Leal-Hudson, the attorney representing the interests of the 4-year-old. She added that her goal was for the little boy "to have a life as normal as possible." The minor is being closely monitored by health professionals, according to the Harris County Police Department.

Authorities say that methamphetamine was manufactured and distributed at the Houston building where the boy was found. Officers raided the site and found the locked closet door and the boy inside.

Leal-Hudson told People magazine that it is not known how long the boy spent in the closet, but he assumes that they sometimes left him there for hours.

Her mother, April Burrier, 32, was not home at the time of the raid. She was arrested when she returned to the scene and charged with endangering the life of a minor, according to the Harris County Police Department.

It was not yet known Wednesday whether he had pleaded guilty to the charge or had hired an attorney who can speak on his behalf. Burrier is in custody and it is also unknown if he has been assigned bail.

Police said the alleged owner of the property, Daniel Clark Morris III, has not been located and are requesting public help to find it.

Authorities say they found drug paraphernalia and sex toys just outside the closet.

The boy also told authorities that he was forced to sit on a very tall refrigerator as punishment for coming out of the closet. He said he feared falling asleep and falling to the floor.

The boy's father is allegedly trying to get custody of the boy.

People magazine's attempts to contact the father on Wednesday were unsuccessful.

The case will return to court next month.
