Last Wednesday was certainly not Zachary Kingsbury's day.

This 20-year-old tried to evade the police in North Carolina by jumping into the sea and swimming with great courage, to end up in the company of a shark that passed him on the run.

According to local WCET channel, police had stopped the car Kingsbury was driving for a possible traffic violation in the coastal town of Surf City when officers saw "smuggled" material inside the vehicle.

They then urged him to get out of the car. The boy did so, but immediately he ran towards a nearby beach and jumped into the water of the Atlantic Ocean, where he began to swim away from the astonished agents.

The Surf City police decided to deploy a drone to keep track of the intrepid escapee, who proved to be in very good physical shape, to the point that the device's battery ran out before the power of the man being pursued.

Within an hour of swimming, the suspect had managed to move about 4,000 feet from shore. What is not known until now is whether he had noticed that a shark 5 feet long was very close to his wake, as can be seen in the images recorded by the drone.

"At that time the operation was transformed into a rescue operation," Surf City police said in a statement, asking the Coast Guard, firefighters and police in a neighboring town for help.

According to the Charlotte Observer newspaper, Kingsbury was finally arrested nearly three hours after he started his escape on a beach north of Surf City and apparently had to be persuaded to get out of the water.

After his spectacular physical display, which has been applauded on the networks, this emulator of Michael Phelps is being held in the Pender County Jail, where he has been charged with charges of resistance to arrest, obstructing the performance of an agent, in addition possession of objects for drug use, amphetamines and half an ounce of marijuana, according to the Observer.
