MotoGP world champion Nicky Hayden died earlier today in a Cesena hospital after he was rammed by a car while training on his bike on a Rimini highway in Italy last week.

Hayde, 35, collided head-on with a Peugeot vehicle. The car window was smashed, the windshield broken, and the rider's bike completely destroyed. According to the authorities, they will review the recordings of the security cameras, thus determining if Hayden did not respect the stop sign.

After the accident, Hayden, who had been an official pilot of the Honda Superbike team since leaving the MotoGP championship two seasons ago, was rescued at the scene, before being transferred by helicopter to the Cesena hospital. Due to the severe injuries to his head and chest, doctors were forced to induce him into a coma.

During his stay in the hospital, the doctors announced that the American had severe brain damage, it was on Monday that his death was confirmed. His family and fiancee were by his side at all times.

As soon as the seriousness of his condition was revealed, numerous messages of encouragement were published on networks. "We're all with you," Italian rider Valentino Rossi, a seven-time MotoGP champion and Hayden's direct rival in 2006, said on the networks. "Nicky is one of the best friends I've ever had [in races]."
