The case of Lane Graves, a two-year-old boy who was dragged in June last year by an alligator at a Walt Disney World hotel in Orlando, FL, caused a furor. The boy was playing with his father and his 4-year-old sister near a lake when the animal attacked him. The minor's father tried to save him and faced the reptile without success and was hurt from the confrontation. Thus, the boy died and his body was found 18 hours after the attack.

This week alligators were again in the spotlight when a 9-footer attacked another girl in the knee and calf. The 10-year-old girl had her legs in the water in a Moss Park lake in central Florida when the animal approached and bit her.

Fortunately, the baby hit the animal in the nostrils after being bitten, a technique she learned in a reptile theme park. Her quick action allowed her to escape. After the event, the animal was captured and slaughtered by local authorities. The park was closed so that the facilities could be registered since many people bathe in the lagoons and in the lakes of the park at this time of the year.

The presence of alligators in Florida's lakes and canals is well known, however attacks like this and that of Little Lane are rare.
