A couple residing in the state of Oregon face murder charges after they deprived their little 5-year-old daughter of food in such a way that they caused her death.

Estevan Garcí, 34, and his wife Sacora Horn-García, 31, were arrested in April by authorities after the child's autopsy determined that the cause of her death was malnutrition.

The couple now face charges of involuntary manslaughter, death from abuse and criminal mistreatment, according to official information from the Deschutes County, Oregon court, obtained by People magazine.

Additional legal documents in the case tell details of the difficult final days that little Maliyah Hope García, who was adopted when she was only three months old.

On December 21, 2016, the girl had collapsed on the floor, at which time Horn-García made an emergency call to line 911, but by the time the authorities arrived, the little girl was already lifeless. Her little body weighed just 24 pounds.

According to witnesses, Maliyah was a victim of constant mistreatment and was treated differently from her other brothers. She was forced to take ice-cold baths, not talk to other children, and eat salads, cookies, and apples for dinner. The couple also reportedly monitored the little girl at night to prevent her from trying to eat without her authorization.

"His arms and legs were on the bones and his skin could be seen hanging," reported one of the police officers who answered Horn-Garcia's emergency call.
