Do they want to live as long as possible and age with minimal ailments? Well, it would not be bad to listen to the advice of María Félix. Be careful, not the legendary film actress, who died fifteen years ago, but her namesake: an old woman from Jalisco who has already turned 116.
One of the longest-standing women in the world, Félix told the EFE news agency that you must first follow a healthy diet that includes wild products. "What helped me were the nopales, the pingüica [a type of fruit], purslane and quelite [an herb]," he said.
Félix, who grew up in the arid towns of the state of Zacatecas, in northwestern Mexico, added that although he kept the habit of consuming these foods for a long time, now he gets the necessary vitamins to stay active from soy milk.
In a good mood, he assured that he is not afraid of death, which he has "seen happen" up close several times. "It goes through here, it gets there in the middle, it goes to that other corner, it goes through the other corner, it takes two or three, but here it doesn't turn, why would it be?" He said.
“Doña María” or “Mariquita” -as she is called by her friends- was born on July 20, 1900 and since she was a child she was orphaned, since she assures that her father was killed for being a supporter of Pancho Villa during the Mexican Revolution. Because of that, she lived on the charity of others, she added.
With her husband, to whom she was married for more than 50 years, she had 10 children. Six have already died. Today, Félix has 20 grandchildren, 53 great-grandchildren and 23 great-great-grandchildren who live between Jalisco, Zacatecas and Mexico City. She assures that she does not suffer from the ailments of a woman of her age: she does not suffer from diabetes or hypertension and her lungs are healthy.
Even, from time to time he takes "a drink" or a beer to "taste" and thus keep his good humor and mischief. Bravo!
