The first major operations by immigration authorities in Florida - under the mandate of President Donald Trump - are already taking place in that state and in Puerto Rico with the arrest of 76 people by the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Service. of the United States (ICE).
According to ICE released through a press release, 57 of those seized had a criminal record that included felonies such as lewd behavior, aggravated assault with deadly weapons and drugs. The remaining 19 had less serious violations such as fraud, theft, or driving without a license.
It is not clear whether other individuals close to them also suffered the same fate, as the statement from this entity indicates that during these operations, "ICE officers frequently find other foreigners who are illegally in the United States" -and they then evaluate each of those cases that could also end in arrests.
This wave of arrests follows the arrest of Colombian Bárbara Liliana Higuera, who was recently detained after leaving her nine-year-old daughter at school - a fact that sparked strong rumors that immigration was triggering raids in Miami.
Higuera's defense attorney, Wilfredo “Willy” Allen told the Diario de las Américas at that time that he believes the number of arrests is increasing in this city and that they are now more difficult to overcome because the authorities have eliminated the executive action that allowed capture, identify and release those people who are not considered a danger to the community while their cases were aired.
Allen also related his experience going to court to represent Higuera. "I saw people from Serbia, Bangladesh and other countries for the only crime of being illegal in this country, all of them recently detained by immigration authorities," he said. "There are currently operations in this county to detain people under different categories."
ICE, meanwhile, has denied that it is conducting massive raids in Florida.
