Again, a federal judge suspended an executive order from President Donald Trump, this time aimed at withdrawing federal funds from cities called "sanctuaries," that is, cities with policies that limit the collaboration of local agents with federal immigration authorities to detain and deport undocumented immigrants.
As reported by the Reuters agency, the judge William Orrick of the federal court of San Francisco made this decision - which is national in scope - after considering the arguments of the lawyers representing San Francisco and the California county of Santa Clara, who assured that they would face irreparable harm if that presidential decree was not blocked.
Representatives from Santa Clara County said that if the court order that Orrick blocked on Tuesday went into effect, that county would be losing nearly nities each year.
The White House chief of staff, Reince Priebus, assured that they would appeal the ruling and expressed his confidence in the future of the order saying that "we are going to win in the Supreme Court at some point."
For his part, the Mayor of Los Angeles, Eric Garcetti, reacted with joy to this result. "Judge Orrick's decision today," he said, "is good news and reminds us that people's rights transcend political stunts." At the same time, he took the opportunity to ask the federal government to stop criminalizing immigrants and work on immigration reform.
