A 17-year-old girl who was surfing with her father died Monday after being attacked off the coast of Australia by a shark, which ripped off her leg.

In the attack, which occurred in the coastal city of Esperance in western Australia, Laeticia Brouwer and her father were "not far from the coast" when she was attacked by the shark.

The father was able to take her back to the beach, where a nurse who was there applied a tourniquet to her leg to prevent her from bleeding to death.

"They really tried to give the girl all kinds of possibilities [of survival] in such terrible circumstances," paramedic Paul Gaughan told The Australian newspaper, "unfortunately, in this case, the injuries were too serious."

For its part, the Perth Now newspaper indicated that Laeticia was transferred to the local hospital, where she died. The young woman and her family came from the town of Singleton and were enjoying their Easter holidays on the beach in Kelp Beds.

After the death, the minor's uncle, Steve Evans, spoke to local media thanking rescuers, medical personnel and witnesses to the incident for their help in trying to save his niece.

"We are comforted by the fact that Laeticia died doing something she loved," the man said through tears. “The ocean was her passion and that of her family. Surfing was something she loved doing with her father and sisters.”

The beach will be closed until further notice.
