The image of a young woman wandering naked and wet on a California highway alarmed the driver of a car. The man stopped to assist the woman who was wandering one morning down Millerton Road in Fresno County and called 911. When Sheriff's Department officers from that county spoke to her, they noticed that she was saying inconsistent things and seemed disoriented. "My name is Joanna and I am a mermaid," she whispered.
The woman had wet hair and her only clothing was a black sports bra. Officers took her to a hospital for evaluation as she had no identification document with her. The young woman was found near the Table Mountain Casino and Lake Millerton.
In the end, detectives managed to identify her but did not reveal her name, citing her privacy and in case she had been the victim of a crime. Tony Botti, a spokesman for the Fresno Sheriff, told Univision News that the woman was 33 years old and from Virginia. According to a relative of hers who contacted the police, the woman had traveled to California a few days ago with the intention of moving there. Arrangements are already being made to reunite her with her relatives.
Interestingly, the woman who claimed to be a mermaid suffers from syndactyly, a genetic malformation that fuses tissues and skin of the fingers and toes.
