Santiago Barberi González, son of the well-known Colombian designer Nancy González and creative director of the handbag brand of the same name, died on Friday of last week at the age of 40. The cause is unknown. Together with his mother, he managed the well-known line of luxury bags that was launched in 1998. "It is with great sadness that we inform you today of the death of our beloved Santiago," wrote Nancy through her Instagram account. "Santiago was a creative genius, an extraordinary talent, with a great passion for his work, his art and his family."

“He was a man with great humanity, generosity of spirit and a profound kindness rarely seen. It was unique”, adds the designer in the photo. "Although it is extremely sad, we want to take this opportunity to thank his friends, partners and clients [for accompanying him] on his journey and [say] that we are going to continue paying tribute to him with the brand."

The Nancy González firm is known for its luxurious crocodile skin handbags found in luxury stores like Neiman Marcus and Bergdorf Goodman. The exquisite and original designs have captivated the hearts of celebrities such as Sofía Vergara, Sarah Jessica Parker and Diane Guerrero. Friends and admirers of the line include shoe designer Brian Atwood, Marie Claire's creative director and Project Runway judge, Nina Garcia; and Venezuelan investor Carmen Busquets who also dedicated a few words to her on Instagram.

"We are very sad to learn of the death of our dear friend Santiago … Funny, tremendously intelligent … passionate about design and the heart of the Nancy González brand, we will miss him," Busquets wrote.

Barberi González was linked to his mother's company while a student at the Savannah College of Art and Design, and is considered to be the mastermind behind the brand's global expansion. A true entrepreneur, Barberi González started the Santiago González collection in 2010, offering a variety of leather accessories for men. Last year he launched the first shoe collection for Nancy González.

His mother and sister Cristina survive him.
