It is very difficult to summarize the career of our Superwoman of the month, the businesswoman and activist Liliana Gil Valeta, so we will start with her latest project, the Dreamers Ventures platform, a place where ideas are taken very seriously. Read on to discover the best advice from a successful immigrant who has set out to help others who like her dream of reaching the top.

What is your work on this business platform?

I bring experts, mentors, and investors under one roof to help Latino entrepreneurs grow faster and reach their full potential. As an immigrant and an entrepreneur, I have had to learn many things the hard way. […] Having no family here or business mentors, one makes many mistakes that are preventable with information and contacts.

FROM EARRINGS TO ECO PRODUCTS

“In Bogotá I met a couple who create paper molds made from sugar cane that are biodegradable and withstand the heat to bake with them. Also jewelry designers, one in particular with earrings that can be worn in four [different] ways; […] Beauty innovators who have rethought from mascara to skin treatments… we have a lot of talent, what is missing are places to give yourself a chance!”.

Where does the philanthropic vein come from?

That vein comes from cradle and upbringing since my parents always instilled in me how important faith and living with a grateful heart is. I live my life under the conviction that the purpose of living is to give. What we have, what we do, what we achieve is part of a larger purpose than simply accumulating wealth and giving ourselves selfish satisfaction. Obsessing over accumulating material things and money is an insatiable goal, but when you give, you have the satisfaction of being and giving happiness impacting lives and leaving a legacy that touches hearts.

If you could say something to your 18-year-old "me", what would you say?

That he stopped wanting to do everything, at the same time, to perfection. That love is not worth suffering (that is the subject of any other long story!) And that what seems like a failure today, may be the most important step and basis to equip yourself for bigger things in the future.

What would be your best advice for other Latinas who want to break through as entrepreneurs in this country?

Something basic that I did not do and now I regret not having done earlier: ask for help! Sometimes our own ego, shyness and cultural obstacles do not let us show vulnerability without understanding that sometimes there is nothing stronger and more admirable than having the courage to recognize that you do not know. Asking for help, looking for sources of financing and surrounding yourself with people who are smarter than you are keys to emerge. Now with the power to “google” there is no excuse since there are a number of organizations such as the SBA, SCORE, etc., events and sources of funding that benefit us as women and as Latinos.

What is the most valuable thing you have learned in your career?

What looks like failure today may be the most important stepping stone and base for equipping yourself for bigger things in the future.
