Did you know that the breast cancer survival rate has gone from 75 percent since 1992 to over 90 percent? This news, which may not surprise many, would sound crazy 25 years ago, when Evelyn H. Lauder, daughter-in-law of the founder of Estée Lauder, started the pink ribbon campaign that made the cosmetic industry and public opinion aware of this disease that at that time was not covered in magazines or news and was practically a taboo.
"Twice as many women were dying of breast cancer as those dying of AIDS and no one knew what breast cancer was," says Myra Biblowit, one of the first leaders of the initiative and president of the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. "Evelyn was one of the first people to bring it to light and allow women to talk about breasts and breast health."
In 1992 Evelyn H. Lauder, who was a member of the board of directors for the Memorial Sloan Kettering Center, decided that something more needed to be done about the way breast cancer was treated. After meeting with experts, her trusted team and the director of Self magazine of that time, Alexandra Penney, the pink bow initiative was born, which has been one of the most successful in recent times.
Two decades, and more than 70 million dollars raised later, today the pink ribbon symbolizes hope, strength and survival and to celebrate its anniversary the company has published this mini-documentary directed by Sophy Holland that you can see at the beginning of the article, in which they relate the history of this symbol that is already recognized worldwide and share some of the scientific advances that specialists in this field have achieved in recent years thanks to the fundraising of this campaign.
In case you didn't know, you can also contribute to the cause simply by buying products like these that donate some or all of the profits from sales to the foundation that Evelyn H. Lauder created.
But not all the work to definitively end breast cancer is done, as the message that closes this video says: “25 years ago there was no pink bow. In the future we want there to be no need for a pink bow.”
