At this point in life, who hasn't got a henna tattoo? It is an easy alternative to the real tattoo and is a fun reminder of holidays or special occasions. However, it can become dangerous if one is not careful.
Seven-year-old Madison Gulliver was on vacation with her family when she asked her parents if she could get a henna tattoo. The parents said yes and they took their daughter to a room inside the hotel where they were staying for them to do so. According to reports HelloGiggles, shortly after Gulliver began to complain that the design itched, and then a series of painful blisters began to come out from above the elbow to the fingers.
The parents, alarmed, took her to the hospital.
The burn has left a permanent scar, according to the British publication Metro.
But why does henna cause that?
Natural henna is healthy to use, since it is made only from leaves but there are variations of temporary tattoos that carry chemicals that can be very toxic.
In the case of black henna, it carries p-phenylenediamine, a chemical that is found in some hair dyes and this can burn the skin.
Now, this does not mean that they cannot enjoy the popular temporary tattoos. However, next time make sure they really are what they say they are.
