Designer Carolina Herrera was honored with the Portrait of a Nation award from the Smithsonian's National Portrait Gallery, in Washington, DC.
The famous Venezuelan creator was recognized for her incredible contribution to the fashion world and was the only Latina to receive such an important award.
Herrera's portrait, which is now being exhibited at the prestigious museum, was made by the late artist Robert Mapplethorpe in 1979.
"I think he is one of the best photographers in the country. He [can] do anything,”the designer told WWD magazine. “This was his favorite. I am proud that it is here for the public. He would be very happy."
During the gala held in said museum on Sunday night, $ 1.75 million was raised that will be used to acquire more works of art.
Along with her, singer Aretha Franklyn, athlete Hank Aaron, artist Maya Lin and gold medal winner Kyle Carpenter, also received important recognition.
