According to authorities, more than 20 people have died after the fire last Wednesday at the Hogar Seguro Virgen de la Asunción youth hostel in Guatemala.
Approximately 540 minors who were victims of family violence resided in the place. The first number reported was 19 dead and 25 wounded, but at dawn more people died in various hospitals.
The first version of the authorities pointed out that it was the inmates who started the fire, however the investigation continues. "This makes us reflect that, as a state, what are we doing?" Attorney General Thelma Aldana said at a press conference.
According to information from the magazine Proceso, previously 60 minors had escaped due to the poor conditions and mistreatment of the institution
