A Hispanic mother from California who just got her master's degree in education and found a moving way to pay tribute to her parents in an image that went viral.
Earlier this month, at 29 , Erica Alfaro graduated from San Diego State University. The best tribute to her parents, who work hard in agriculture, was an image with them in the same field where they once worked together. Her parents have been an inspiration to finish her university studies.
Alfaro said he wanted to honor his parents with his graduation photos, which were taken in the fields where his mother still works.
In the photos, Erica wears her cap and gown and poses with her parents, who are in their work clothes. Alfaro's parents are also immigrants from Mexico and were never able to go to school.
Alfaro told CNN that at 15 he dropped out of high school after becoming pregnant. But after working for two years in the field with her parents, she rejoined the study in a home school program.
“One day, I told my mom that I was very tired and she said, 'This is how life is going to be from now on. The only people who don't have to go through this are the ones who get an education. ' Those words stayed with me,”he told the publication.
Erica was accepted to California State University at San Marcos, but during her first semester, in 2012, her son was diagnosed with cerebral palsy. Alfaro's grades suffered, but she moved on, determined to give her son a better life, the life her parents worked hard to give her. "It took me almost six years to get my degree," Alfaro told CNN. At the end of her psychology career, Erica was selected to give the speech to her peers at the graduation ceremony.
"The reason I share my story is because I want to encourage undocumented single mothers, and people experiencing domestic violence, to get an education and reach their goals," said Alfaro.
In addition to the master's degree he has just earned, Alfaro has a BA in psychology from San Diego State University. Erica plans to become a school counselor.
