A powerful 7.1-magnitude earthquake on the Richter scale shook Mexico City causing landslides, evacuations of businesses, closure of runways at the airport, eviction of offices and homes; and blackouts throughout the Mexican capital.

The earthquake occurred at 1:14 pm local time, with an epicenter between the states of Morelos and Puebla, both neighbors of the Aztec capital.

Impressive scenes immediately began to circulate on social networks with facades of buildings collapsing, people leaving homes and offices fleeing in terror and panoramic shots of the city where columns of smoke were seen, probably indicating collapses of buildings.

Witnesses in areas surrounding the Paseo de la Reforma avenue, Calzada de Tlalpan and the Condesa, Del Valle and Roma neighborhoods - geographically central in the capital - showed videos and reported collapses of buildings in the area.

An impressive video showed the detachment of a wall from the Ministry of Employment in the Portales neighborhood. The Benito Juárez International Airport suspended all activities and closed its runways to evaluate the facilities.

Landslides were reported near the Mexican Stock Exchange and the children's hospital, without these being confirmed.

Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto sent a tweet stating that he had called the National Emergency Committee to evaluate the situation. Both the president and the interior minister, Guillermo Osorio Chong, encouraged the capital to evacuate the houses.

This is the second earthquake to shake Mexico in less than a month; on September 8, another violent earthquake occurred with an epicenter in the state of Chiapas that left several dead in that state and in the neighboring state of Oaxaca.
