Otto Warmbier, the 22-year-old young university student recently released by the North Korean government, died Monday, his family revealed in a statement.
“It is our sad duty to report that our son has completed his journey home. Surrounded by his beloved family, Otto died today at 2:20 pm,”reads part of the shared message.
“We want to thank the wonderful professionals at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center who did their best for Otto. Unfortunately, the tortuous treatment our son received at the hands of North Koreans did not allow the outcome to be any different from the one we sadly received today,”he continues.
The student had been detained for more than 17 months, under the Kim Jong-un regime, and was facing a 15-year prison sentence and forced labor for having committed "hostile acts" against North Korea by stealing a propaganda poster policy of the hotel where you were staying during a trip to the Asian country.

According to Otto's family, the young man was "brutalized and terrified" by the North Korean authorities, mistreatment that left a student in a coma. On June 12, the United States government revealed the news of Warmbier's release.
"When Otto returned to Cincinnati on June 13, he was unable to speak, see, or react to verbal commands. He didn't look comfortable, he looked distressed. Even though we would never hear his voice again, after one day the countenance of his face changed, he was at peace. He was home and we think he could feel that, "added the statement shared today by the student's family.
