Dan Hanegby, a 36-year-old man, became the first user of New York City's popular Citi Bike system to lose his life.

According to a report shared by the online site of The New York Times, Hanegby was traveling on the Chelsea area of Manhattan on Monday morning, on one of the system's renowned blue bicycles and in his attempt to dodge a vehicle, who was apparently poorly parked, lost his balance and fell under the rear tires of a bus that was traveling on the same road.

Despite the fact that the emergency agencies arrived in a matter of minutes and transported the man to a nearby hospital, the trauma suffered by the cyclist during the accident killed him.

The report adds that Hanegby, a tennis-loving Israeli immigrant, worked in the financial system and was the father of two young children, with whom he always enjoyed outdoor activities on the weekends.

Details of the preliminary investigation by authorities revealed that Hanegby's death was accidental and that after the collision, the 52-year-old bus driver remained at the scene.

Citi Bike opened to the public in May 2013 and since then its shared bikes have been used more than 43 million times, a spokesperson for the program told the New York newspaper. During the four years it has been in operation, the system has never had an incident with fatalities.
