Transport company Uber is in the midst of a new controversy, after it decided not to support the taxi drivers' protest against President Donald Trump's decree that temporarily prohibits the entry of citizens of Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen to the United States.
As a sign of rejection of that decision, which has already generated angry responses from artists such as Rihanna and Iranian actress Taraneh Alidoosti, New York City taxi drivers went on strike refusing to pick up passengers at John F. Kennedy International Airport for an hour last Saturday.
Many celebrities have also been criticizing that presidential decision.
But Uber, far from showing solidarity, took the opportunity to even promote its rates.
Although Uber has the option to raise its prices in certain circumstances -such as during peak seasons- this Saturday, in the midst of the taxi strike, the company sent a message on Twitter stating that its fare hike was not in effect in the #JFK airport.
These are the two messages that generated the controversy. First, that of city taxi drivers, protesting a measure that seems "inhumane and unconstitutional" and that of Uber, freezing their rates to continue working during the strike.
This Uber message was interpreted as a way to break the strike at the airport and critics pointed to the fact that Uber CEO Travis Kalanick is one of the members of Trump's business advisory group.
Immediately hundreds of Twitter users began to express their rejection through the hashtag #DeleteUber, and send messages saying: "You work with Trump, I will use Lyft."
These were some of his opinions:
Meanwhile, Uber sent a statement apologizing for the confusion and saying that it was not his intention to break the strike. Likewise, its CEO announced through a business tweet that there are several employees on his payroll affected by this decree and that his company will be supporting them. Above these lines the message you sent appears.
