When Paola Álvarez left her home on March 22 to cover her workday at a nonprofit hospital in New York, it never occurred to her that she couldn't return to her family for how long. “I feel like I'm going to break soon; I don't know if I can bear this whole situation. My fiance is at home taking care of my son from my first marriage and my one-year-old baby. I don't return [home] because of my baby [who] was in intensive care for three months,”says the nurse, who saw the area where she worked 17 years in an intensive care unit transformed due to the COVID-19 pandemic that whipping the big apple.
We need more nurses. An ICU nurse sees one or two patients, but we are now treating three or four patients. All with coronaviruses and all with tubes”.
According to Álvarez, it is almost impossible for medical personnel not to be infected by the way in which they are working. “The nurses are getting sick, there is not enough medical equipment. We need [the mask] N95, suits,”says Álvarez, 42, who already has a sore on his nose from wearing an N95 mask and a surgical mask on it to be able to wear it for more than seven days.
“Before [the mask] was used once and thrown away, but it [can no longer] be used anymore. [I have a] plastic mask [that] was given to me last week and I have to disinfect it myself. I wear the same suit and [put] down things. I don't sweat [but] for the first time in my life I'm sweating.”
And is not for less. Personnel in good health work 12 to 13 hours a day. "It is very difficult. Some who are covering sick people are not trained to treat so many patients, "says Álvarez, who came to the United States when he was 11." [Nurses working with newborns are working], who work in schools."

So far across the United States, there are more than 144,000 people diagnosed with coronavirus, and in New York there are more than 59,000. “There are [patients] of all ages, there are patients of 40, 50, 60 and 70; And I'm 42 years old, I'm scared. The situation is very ugly, people do not understand, it is very sad and the worst thing is that they are dying alone”.
“After they admit someone, you don't know anything else about that person, you don't know what happens. Patient representatives give you an iPad for you to see your loved ones, and that's it.”

Thus, through his cell phone, Álvarez also communicates with his family. “[I could] call and say: 'I'm sick, I don't come to work and I stay with my family'; I could be selfish, but I am not. [The] 100% [of us for sure] are going to get sick,”says the nurse, who asks people who have the possibility to donate medical equipment such as N95 masks to health professionals. “But I have to go back [home]; The hospital gave us a hotel until Thursday, and then I don't know what I'll do."
