Although the first cases of people infected with COVID-19 began on the Asian continent, due to its characteristics it has spread rapidly to the rest of the world on a larger or smaller scale. In Latin America, several countries already suffer the consequences of this pandemic.
The first case detected in this region was in Sao Paulo, Brazil, on February 26 and until March 25, and has already totaled 2,433 confirmed infections, according to the Americas Society and Council of the Americas.
Since that month to date, on a larger or smaller scale, most of the nations in this region have been affected. Thus, people who have tested positive for the coronavirus have been confirmed in Antigua and Barbuda, Aruba, The Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Cayman Islands, Curaçao, the Dominican Republic, French Guyana, Granada, Guadeloupe, Guyana, Jamaica, Martinique, Montserrat, Saint Bartholomew, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Saint George, Saint Lucia, Saint Martin, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, and the Virgin Islands.
Other countries that have been named and with their respective cases, until March 25, are: Bolivia with 39; Colombia with 470; Costa Rica with 201; Cuba with 67; El Salvador with 13, Guatemala with 24; Honduras with 52; Mexico with 475; Nicaragua with 2; Paraguay with 41; Peru with 480; Puerto Rico with 51; Uruguay with 217, and Venezuela with 106.
The Latin American nations with the highest number of infections are Chile with 1,306 and Ecuador with 1,211; followed by Panama with 558, Argentina with 502 and the Dominican Republic with 488.
Each country, independently, is applying different measures to try to contain the coronavirus pandemic. However, the crisis continues and, at the moment, health authorities worldwide do not have an estimate of when it could be fully controlled.
