Bacardi has announced that he will contribute to the fight against the coronavirus by manufacturing hand sanitizer, one of the most demanded and difficult to get products since the pandemic broke out.

According to a statement obtained by People en Español, the famous rum maker took advantage of its plant in Cataño, Puerto Rico - the world's largest of its kind - to produce ethanol, a substance necessary to make hand sanitizers. The company has teamed up with Olein Rifinery to source the raw materials with which to produce 1.7 million units of 10 ounce hand sanitizers each.

According to the company, the World Health Organization recommends using 70% alcohol in the production of the product to be effective against the virus.

Half a million disinfectants will be donated in Puerto Rico, particularly to groups such as postal employees, firefighters, and police. The rest will be distributed through the United Way organization.

“We are very proud to be able to help our community. Bacardi is a family company and at times like these is when that family support is most felt, " José Class of Supply Chain and Manufacturing, Bacardi Latin America and the Caribbean, José Class told People en Español." It has been for everyone an apprenticeship, changing our routines and, here at the factory, even changing from rum to other materials to assist in the production of hand sanitizers."

And when all this happens, I look forward to meeting all my colleagues to give them a toast to the great work."
