Every dog lover knows that these faithful companions often give their paws to masters and caretakers. But have you ever thought about what a dog means by doing that? Is your dog really showing you that he loves you?
Experts believe that this is the case: giving the paw is a sign that your dog is responding to your love and care. At least so says Rebecca Forrest, who assists dog trainers through The Dog Clinic.
"By putting his foot on you when you are stroking him, he further extends his contact and reciprocates his affection," Forrest said in statements published by Southern Living magazine.
And although this would be an act that indicates your pet's affection for you, it also means other things. Perhaps with this action your dog wants to tell you that he feels insecure, that he is afraid or that he simply needs more affection or attention at that precise moment.

"Observe the rest of the dog's body language", recommends the expert, who also indicates that you should be alert to possible signs of anxiety in the animal "such as yawning, cracking the tongue or ears down".
But watch out! There are very gluttonous puppies and many who have learned that giving you the little leg or placing it on your leg immediately will receive a rich prize or snack. If so, don't fall for your sweet-toothed puppy, Forrest recommends.
'If you let your dog decide when to feed it, it will be overweight [over time] which will impact its health."
So now you know: the next time your dog paws at you, say "I love you" and pamper him how much you love him.
