MacKenzie Bezos Announces He Will Donate Half Of His Fortune

MacKenzie Bezos, the ex-wife of Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon, has just announced that she will donate half of her immense fortune to charity. The announcement is made just a few months after the divorce between the 49-year-old writer and the 55-year-old New Mexico-born billionaire was finalized.

"I have a disproportionate amount of money to share," said Bezos when signing the Giving Pledge agreement, which invites the planet's mega-riches to dedicate part of their fortune to philanthropic works. The donation can be made either in life or posthumously.

The initiative was created by two of the richest men on the planet according to Forbes magazine: Warren Buffett and Bill Gates, as well as the latter's wife, Melinda.

"My approach to philanthropy will continue to be very careful," Bezos explained in a letter signed on May 25 and published on Tuesday. “I will take time and care [to choose the causes] but I will not wait. And I will continue to do so until the coffers are emptied.”

And boy, does his fortune have anything to do with it: MacKenzie Bezos became one of the richest people on the planet after consummating his divorce from Jeff Bezos after the couple announced their separation in January. According to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, the novelist is now the 22nd billionaire in the world ranking with a fortune of approximately $ 3.36 billion. Her husband ranks number one on the list with $ 114 billion.

MacKenzie was one of Amazon's first employees and met her husband when they both worked on Wall Street. The couple had four children and at the time of their divorce their combined fortune was estimated at about $ 137 billion.
