In what many consider an advanced final, FC Barcelona and Liverpool FC meet on Wednesday in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League semi-final with their sights set on earning a ticket to the final to be played next 1 June at the Wanda Metropolitano stadium in Madrid.
The Barcelona led by Leo Messi comes to this decisive match at the Camp Nou stadium in the Catalan capital with the joy of having won this weekend the Spanish domestic competition, LaLiga, for the eighth time in 11 years, and at a great distance from his persecutors, Atlético de Madrid and his arch rival, Real Madrid. But if the Catalan club has dominated football at the national level for years, in Europe it has not won a Champions since 2015.
The English landed in Barcelona on Tuesday with the intention of storming the Barça feud and qualifying for the second consecutive year to the final of the European championship. Last year's in the Ukrainian capital, Kiev, they lost to Real Madrid. Unlike their rivals on Wednesday, Liverpool are still immersed in the fight for the Premier League title, the English domestic championship, in which they are second to a point by Manchester City with two days to go.
What: UEFA Champions League first leg.
When: Wednesday, May 1 at 3 pm ET.
Where: Barcelona's Camp Nou stadium.
How to watch it: on Univision and the TNT channel, in addition to the FuboTv streaming service.
Protagonists
The two players on which the eyes of the millions of fans who are expected to follow the game will focus will be Argentina's Leo Messi and Egypt's Mohamed Salah. The Barça star, considered the best player in recent decades, has won 34 titles, including 10 Spanish leagues and four Champions with the Catalan club. The 31-year-old from Rosario comes to this match in top form, after a great season in which he has been decisive for the victories of the only team he has played with since he arrived in Barcelona at the age of 13.
The hopes of the Liverpool fans remain largely on the back of Salah, who last year broke into the exclusive club of the great soccer stars with a spectacular goal production with which he helped, among other things, lead his team to the final of the Champions League against Madrid. An achievement that became bitter when before the half of the match in Kiev he had to retire injured and helplessly assisted the defeat of his team.
The Beatles city club, one of the most popular in the world, has won five Champions in its history, the same number as Barcelona. But from the last of the Reds 14 years ago.
Whatever happens on Wednesday, the two teams will meet at the return match at Anfield, the Liverpool stadium, on May 7. Whoever wins the two will play the final against the winner of the other semifinal, played by Ajax from Amsterdam and Totteham Hotspurs from London. In the first leg on Tuesday, the Dutch won 0-1.
