A huge tragedy has shaken the baseball world after the sudden death of baseball players Luis Valbuena, 33, and José Castillo, 37, who died early Friday morning in a car accident in Venezuela.
The incident occurred in the La Negrita sector of the municipality of San Felipe, in the state of Yaracuy, located in the north of the country.
The players had just played a game that they had played with their current team, the Cardinals of Lara, against the Lions of Caracas and that they had played at the University Stadium. They both boarded a car driven by teammate Carlos Rivero, a third-base player, but somewhere along the way the car hit an object causing it to overturn.
The driver of the car survived, but Valbuena and Castillo died at the site.
"We are saddened by the tragic news that Luis Valbuena and former major league player José Castillo have died in a car accident," said spokesmen for the Major League Baseball Association of America (MLB).) through a message transmitted through their social networks.
Sources in Venezuela pointed out that the driver apparently dodged a stone on the road that was probably posted by criminals, a tactic used on local roads to dock travelers.
Valbuena joined the major leagues since 2008 and played with the Houston Astros, the Chicago Cubs, the Cleveland Indians and the Seattle Mariners. Castillo played for five seasons for the MLB with the San Diego Pirates, the San Francisco Giants and the aforementioned Astros.
This tragedy reminds us of what happened in January 2017 when Yordano Ventura and Andy Marte, two great stars of baseball in the Dominican Republic died in spectacular car accidents that same day.
