Juan David Ortíz, a 35-year-old border agent charged with a series of chilling 12-day murders in Laredo, could face capital punishment.

This was announced on Wednesday by Isidro “Chilo” Alaniz, Webb and Zapata County District Attorney. The official announced that a jury decided to aggravate the charges against the former marine and that they will now seek the death penalty against him.

Ortiz was arrested since last September 15 and was being held in a cell in that county on bail by Nikki Enriquez, 28. They all died with at least one shot to the head in the area delimited by US Highway 83 and the highway. Webb County Interstate I-35. The only exception was Hernández, who was shot in the neck and subsequently received a blow to the skull.

"The pattern, the common factor is that all [their victims] were raised on Avenida San Bernardo, which is an area known for their sex workers," prosecutor Alaníz exclusively told People en Español in October. "It is a complicated matter because Ortíz was a law enforcement officer and part of his activities included investigating the trafficking of people who are hidden in hotels on that avenue," the prosecutor explained, also assuring that at some point prior to the executions he was in contact “with at least one” of their victims.
