The life of 19-year-old Kayla Hayes changed forever after learning about domestic violence. Seth Aaron Fleury, 23, was sentenced to 12 years in prison after pleading guilty at trial. Fleury brutally bit his ex-girlfriend's lip when she refused to kiss him and refused to return to him after being abused by Fleury during a year of relationship.

The young woman is still healing physically and mentally from the incident that occurred on October 21. On her Facebook page, Hayes shared a message to motivate other victims of domestic violence to seek help.

"This was the day a piece of me died," he wrote. "I was puddled in my own blood, with most of my lip dropping onto my leg, I felt a fire in my entire mouth. I was confused and terrified and didn't know how I could show my face again. At the time, I wanted those seconds to be the last of my life. I wanted to give up forever.”

On the night of the brutal attack, Fleury met Hayes to discuss their relationship. "It wasn't there to go back to him, it was there so he could correct his mistakes," she explained on Facebook. However, he was angry when she did not want to go back to him, he kissed her forcibly and when she leaned back he bit her lower lip so hard that it was amputated.

The young woman underwent emergency plastic surgery but the doctors were unable to reattach her lip, which left her with several scars and without being able to move her mouth as before.

“I couldn't understand how this happened so quickly. I couldn't understand how he was so angry, "continues his message. Hayes says he started screaming, fearing for his life, and his ex escaped, leaving him after the attack. "I remember the look of terror on the face of the man who saved my life that day," he says of a stranger who called the police.

Fleury called her ex-girlfriend again when she was being transported by ambulance to the hospital. She confesses that, like many victims of domestic violence, she initially felt guilty. Time has helped her heal and see everything more clearly. "This happened because I decided not to return with someone who did not deserve me," he admits.

Before the attack, she saw red flags in their relationship that she ignored. "I was the property of my attacker, she manipulated me to the point that I almost lost everything and everyone in my life," she reflects in her Facebook post. The young woman acknowledges that this traumatic experience has made her feel afraid of falling in love and raising a family. On her blog, Rise Above, she recounts her experiences hoping to help other women.
