At least four people have died from the devastating passage of Hurricane Florence in South Carolina and North Carolina. The victims include a woman and infant who died in North Carlina after a tree was felled over their home.

"Willmington Police can confirm at least two fatalities from Hurricane Florence in Wilmington," WDP said on Twitter on Friday. "The father was transported [to the New Hanover Regional Medical Center] due to his injuries."

The other two deaths occurred when a person was reported to have cardiac arrest in the town of Hampstead, but rescuers were unable to save the victim due to the collapse of trees, a Pender County spokeswoman confirmed.

The fourth fatality occurred in Lenoir County where a person was connected to a power generator, as confirmed by the office of North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper.

Although Florence weakened to Category 1 by making landfall this morning near Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina, and is now considered a tropical storm, it continues to wreak havoc. More than 650,000 homes remain light in the southeast of the country, 550,000 of them in North Carolina alone.
