A nine-year-old girl suffering from cerebral palsy has been classified as a heroine for saving her one-year-old brother from drowning in a pool.

The incident happened on May 5 when Lexie Corneau-Drisdelle, a resident of Nova Scotia, Canada, noticed that her little brother Leeland was going out to the garden of his house to go to the pool.

The absence of the minor was not perceived by his mother, who was on the top floor of the house preparing for a party. It was then when the girl, who due to her physical condition lives chained to a wheelchair, decided to act.

According to family accounts, the girl emitted the loudest scream she could produce to get her parents' attention and try to save the boy.

“I was upstairs changing for the party, her dad was picking up her older brother and my mom was in the kitchen when I suddenly heard Lexie screaming. I immediately panicked and thought 'Oh no! She will have fallen out of the [wheelchair], '” Kelly Jackson, the girl's mother, told CNN.

When the woman and the minor's grandmother came to her, they realized that Leeland was not there. Lexie kept yelling and pointing in the direction of the pool.

That's when they discovered the boy who was immediately taken inside the house. "When my mom told me what was happening I looked out the window and there was her little head by the pool," Jackson continued. "I panicked and my mom ran up to him and pulled him out."

The family gave the creature first aid to stabilize him and they immediately took him to a hospital.

This July 5, Vincent St. Pierre, Mayor of Nova Scotia, gave a special mention to the brave girl for her feat. For her part, the mother of the minor says that now they want to raise public awareness about the things that children like Lexie are capable of.

“Some think that since she has a disability she is not capable of doing things, but if she could walk she would have grabbed him and never let him out. Her disability is only physical. She is a very bright girl. And let her say it.
