This year at the FIFA World Cup the World Cup mascots have not ceased to be protagonists, especially the curious animals and characters that predict the results.
Rabiot, a giant Pacific octopus who correctly "predicted" the results of the three matches of the group stage of the soccer World Cup has been killed and sent to the market, just as the knockout stages of the tournament begin.
The "psychic" octopus predicted that Japan would beat Colombia, tie Senegal and defeat Poland, and became a national sensation during the first stage of the tournament.
His method was to place him in a pool with three food baskets representing Japan winner, Japan's opponent winning and drawing. The first basket he won towards would become his prediction.
Japanese media reported that Kimio Abe, the fisherman who had caught Rabiot, had decided that his business was more important than keeping the "psychic" octopus alive in the final stages.
"I hope that the second Rabiot also gives all the results correctly and that Japan goes all the way," he said, according to Sora News 24.
Japan will face title contenders Belgium on Monday, and while this World Cup has come as a surprise, perhaps being killed was the way Rabiot predicted the outcome of the match.
It is not the first time that an animal has made headlines in predicting the outcome of World Cup games.
This year, a Russian cat named Achilles is touted as the last psychic animal, after correctly predicting that the hosts would beat Saudi Arabia and Egypt, although he incorrectly supported Nigeria in their dispute with Argentina, which beat them 2-1.
