The World Health Organization (WHO) has just listed video game addiction as a disease, which many have called digital heroin.
That young people spend hours and hours in front of their computer, mobile phone or television interacting with video games has generated great concern among parents of new generations and it seems that the threat is real.
In the most recent edition of the classification of diseases, the recognized organization included a condition called "gaming disorder" within the list of conditions associated with mental disorders.
According to WHO, one of the symptoms of this disease is that you stop paying attention to any other activity that is not related to video games. Another of the clear signs that a person suffers from this disorder is that her obsession with video games creates great difficulties and problems in her interpersonal relationships with friends, family and the environment in general. Furthermore, the condition would considerably affect the academic and work performance of the patients.
Despite the fact that the condition does not include substance use, experts say that the symptoms of this new mental illness are very similar to those presented by people who suffer from substance addictions.
"It is a category of clinical condition that is not associated with a psychoactive substance but that at the same time is considered as addictive as any other addiction," revealed WHO about the disease.
CNN revealed through a report on its online site that the disease can be diagnosed only if the person's negative behavior has recurred for at least a year.
Of course, the experts who developed the study of the new condition made it clear that the diagnosis can only be made by a health professional who has the necessary knowledge about it.
