The Miss America beauty pageant seeks to break patterns in its next edition, and its new era.

The managers of the contest announced that the bathing suits will no longer be part of their catwalks, nor will they judge the models by their size or physical appearance.

Former winner Gretchen Carson broke the news on Good Morning America (ABC).

Through Instagram, the official account of the contest confirmed the news with the message: “we changed from our swimsuit to a new era. Bye bye bikini.”

The bikinis section is not the only thing that will see changes. The gala dress section will also be cut, as participants will be asked to wear something that makes them feel good and express their personal style.

“We will no longer judge our candidates on their physical appearance. That's huge,”said Carson, who is the first former Miss America to be named chairman of the board for the Miss America organization. “We are no longer a contest. We are a competition."

Carson explained: We have heard from many young women saying, 'We would love to be a part of your show, but we don't want to be in high heels and a swimsuit.' Guess what, you don't have to do that ever again.”

In lieu of the swimsuit segment, there will be interviews with the contestants, who will be asked about their passion, intelligence, and understanding of the role of Miss America.

In this way, the competition promises to empower contestants to learn leadership skills so that they can show the world from the "inside of their soul." "That is what we are qualifying them for now," he added.

Carlson has recently been an advocate for victims of sexual harassment and an ambassador for the #MeToo movement.

The 2019 Miss America pageant will air live on September 9 on ABC.
