The children of the Dominican María Altagracia Castro were horrified to realize that in the coffin of their mother was the corpse of another woman.
When her mother became ill in 2017 and the doctors warned her that she had only a few months to live, the beloved woman's ten children began to prepare for her funeral. They wanted to say good-bye to her, but one mistake made her farewell an even more painful day, reported Here and Now (Univisión).
Our mother was a warrior. We are from a hill in Salzedo and that lady worked a lot of machete, took a lot of coffee, tied up a lot of tobacco”, remembers her son Miguel Paulino de María, who became a widow when they were children and raised them alone.
Eneris Altagracia, one of her daughters, bought her a purple dress to have it ready for the day of her departure. The family hired the services of the funeral home RG Ortiz Funeral Home Inc. "It is a famous funeral home in Upper Manhattan, close to the family, the community," adds her son Miguel. "The person, even after death, must be treated with dignity."
Maria's remains did not arrive at the funeral at the agreed time, and at 4 pm her children began to worry. Around 6:30 pm, a truck arrived with four coffins because there were three more wakes in other nearby chapels. Miguel received the white coffin and placed it in the center of the chapel, but when he opened it, he had the worst surprise. "When I see the dress and when I see the box I think it is my mother, but when I finish lifting it and I see the face, I say: 'No, this is not my mother.' There was another lady, "said Miguel.
When demanding an explanation from the funeral home, they tell him that the administrator had had a stressful day and passed out and was in the hospital. "No one knows how to tell me where my mother is," she added.
They tell him that he is in the Rivera funeral home, and when he gets there he tells that he saw the body of his mother in the basement of the place. "I left her very pretty and that's what I had in mind, that I was going to find her myself," he admitted. "But when I go down to this basement and I find my mother who gave me life in a basement in conditions that cannot be described, naked as God brought her into the world, not even a towel or sheet to cover her with the elements”
Miguel recorded everything with his cell phone. "My mother was killed twice," he said. "The only thing I felt was that we lived a horror movie," concluded her sister.
