Denver, Colorado police are investigating a series of videos taken by high school students where a coach allegedly forced them to perform painful maneuvers - completely spreading their legs - that the girls say caused injuries.
At least two of the videos were shot by East High School students and sent to the WNews-9 television station to report the events.
In one of the 24-second clips, one of the cheerleaders, Ally Wakefield, is seen screaming in pain and asking to stop her torment while Ozell William, coach of her team, allegedly forced her to open up again helped by 3 other teammates.
The practices took place at a summer cheerleading camp and William was reportedly just hired by the campus.
"I was tearing my ligament and muscle at the same time," the girl later told KUSA. "[William] was pushing me right down the lower leg. He was pushing me with his other knee in the back so that I could maintain a straight posture.”
On June 15, the teen's mother, Kirsten Wakefield, sent the video to campus officials, demanding an explanation. "I am attaching a video of the splits my daughter and other members of the cheerleading team were forced [to do], unless they had a medical note, during their camp and practices," Wakefield said in her message. "This is how my daughter Ally hurt her leg … my husband and I want to know what the administration is going to do about our daughter's injury and how it happened to her."
Subsequently, other girls began to reveal that they had been subjected to the same treatment, according to reports from the aforementioned NBC affiliate. Now three employees of the educational institution have been placed on administrative leave while the police investigation is ongoing.
“As long as a fair investigation is conducted, we have placed director Andy Mendelsberg, assistant director Lisa Porter, cheerleader team coach Ozell Williams and assistant coach Mariah Cladia, as well as assistant counselor, on administrative leave. Michael Hickman,”said Tom Boasberg, superintendent of Denver schools, in a statement.
"We strictly prohibit practices that put the physical and mental health of our students at stake," Boasberg reiterated. "We do not and will not tolerate a situation where a student is forced to perform an activity or exercise that goes beyond the point where they have expressed a desire to stop."
