Several signs calling for the community to report undocumented immigrants appeared Thursday in the streets of Washington, DC But federal immigration authorities announced Friday that they were not the authors of those signs.
"If you see something, say something," says the poster. "If you want to report illegal aliens, call Immigration and Customs."
The poster, titled "Sanctuary City Neighborhood Public Notice," provides numbers from the Department of Homeland Security as well as the Customs and Border Protection department.
The notices, which include the logo of the United States Immigration and Customs Agency (ICE) at the top, indicate that it is a federal crime to harbor, encourage or help an undocumented immigrant who wants to stay in the U. S.
"Like false reports of immigration controls or random raids, notices like these are dangerous and irresponsible," Carissa Cutrell, an ICE spokeswoman, said in a statement to BuzzFeed News. "Anyone who actively incites panic or fear of law enforcement is doing the community a disservice and endangering public safety and the very people they claim to support and represent."
DC Mayor Muriel Bowser also said the flyers are not real. “DC is a sanctuary city. Clearly the flyer was created to scare and divide our residents. We don't approve of it.”
The city has put the Washington DC police department on alert to remove the posters from the streets.
