The new chairman of the National Democratic Committee (DNC), Tom Pérez - who promised President Donald Trump that he would become his "worst nightmare" after being elected this weekend - knows what it's like to turn a nightmare in a triumph.

When the young man from the Dominican Republic was just 12 years old, his father died of a heart attack. From an early age, Pérez had to work hard distributing three newspaper routes, picking up balls on a golf course, and later to pay for college, driving a garbage truck.

Decades after and minutes from being elected President of the Democratic Party this Saturday, Trump sent Pérez a tweet with a very peculiar “congratulation”: “Congratulations to Thomas Pérez, who has just been appointed President of the DNC. I couldn't be happier for him, or for the Republican Party!”

Then, the 55-year-old lawyer who was secretary of labor in the administration of President Barack Obama, answered Trump: “Call me Tom. And don't be too happy. @Keithellison and I, and the Democrats united across the country, we will be your worst nightmare."

In his first words as president of the DNC, Pérez said that history will say that his party led "the resistance" against the Trump government and that they will have made him a "short-term" president.

Pérez obtained 235 votes in his favor, out of a total of 447, in the second round of voting for the DNC presidency. After being appointed leader of the Democrats, he proposed that Keith Ellison, his opponent in this vote and congressman for Minnesota, be named as the party's vice president. He had obtained 200 votes and his proposal was unanimously accepted.

Who is that seasoned lawyer who inaugurates his new position facing Trump? Here are five facts:
