Through his favorite means of communication, Twitter, the President of the United States Donald Trump asked that the Venezuelan opposition leader Leopoldo López, who was imprisoned in his country three years ago, be released.

In his tweet, which the president accompanied with a photo where he appears with López's wife, Lilian Tintori, vice president Mike Pence and Florida senator, Republican Marco Rubio, he stated: Venezuela should allow Leopoldo López, Political prisoner and husband of @liliantintori (we just met with @marcorubio) get out of prison immediately.”

Univisión revealed that with this meeting, held on Wednesday, Lilian Tintori became the first high-profile Latin American woman to meet with the president in the White House.

As reported by BBC Mundo, the leader of the Venezuelan opposition was sentenced "in a controversial trial to almost 14 years in prison for public instigation, property damage, arson and association to commit a crime." The Venezuelan government accused López after the violent student protests that took place in 2014 against the government and left 43 dead.

López is currently incarcerated in the Ramo Verde military prison and, according to the opposition, is the best-known prisoner among more than one hundred political prisoners in the country.
