The love story between Roseann Sdoia and Mike Materia began in the midst of a great tragedy: the young woman applauded the runners of the Boston Marathon when a bomb exploded near her and the firefighter came to her aid in April 2013.

According to Daily Beast, while Sdoia, 48, was transported to a nearby hospital, Materia, 37, was comforting her. "I asked him if he was going to die," she recalls now. "And he said he was going to be fine, that he only had a scratch. He has seen me in the worst of my days.”

At the hospital, doctors amputated part of Sdoia's right leg and Materia did not detach from it. Two months later they had their first date and since then they have been inseparable.

The couple, who will be conducting the Empire State Building Race together today to raise funds for the Special Needs Athletes Foundation (CAF), got engaged last month on a romantic trip to Nantucket Island, Massachusetts. The wedding will take place in October or November of this year. In March, Sdoia will share her inspiring love story - with everything and her happy ending - in a book, Perfect Strangers: Friendship, Strength and Recovery After Boston's Worst Day.
