Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto responded to Donald Trump's reiteration that Mexico will end up reimbursing the United States for the construction of the border wall between the two countries.
The Aztec president responded with a resounding no to the controversial statements of the president-elect at his first press conference after his electoral victory.
"It is evident that we have some differences with the next government of the United States, such as the issue of a wall that Mexico, of course, will not pay for," said Peña Nieto in a meeting with a diplomat. "What I can assure you is that we are going to work with the United States and its president in a relationship that is good for Mexico and good for Mexicans."
Trump made the wall one of the pillars of his presidential campaign, with the addition that it would be Mexico who would finance the enormous work. Now, after the election, the president-elect has indicated that it will be built with the money of the American taxpayers, but that the Mexicans will end up reimbursing them.
"I am not going to wait a year and a half to build the wall, nor am I going to agree with Mexico," Trump said in a meeting with the press at the Trump Tower in New York, in which he also said he admired the Mexicans and their leaders.
Peña Nieto acknowledged that this was the beginning of a "new stage in bilateral negotiations" between the two neighboring countries and trading partners.
"We will not accept anything against our dignity as a country and our dignity as Mexicans," said the president, who stressed that he will fight to obtain guarantees and respect for the rights of Mexican immigrants in the United States.
