A huge surprise caused the message that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle released on Wednesday announcing their estrangement from the English royal family and their intention to become economically independent from the crown.
"After many months of internal reflection and discussion, we have chosen to transition this year to begin to forge a new progressive role within this institution," the Dukes of Sussex explained in a message on their official Instagram account. "We intend to step back as primary members of the royal family and work to become financially independent, while continuing to fully support Her Majesty the Queen [ Elizabeth II]."
The couple also communicated their intention to divide their residence between the United Kingdom and the United States, where Markle is from, without abandoning her "duty" to the Crown.
"This geographic balance will allow us to raise our child with an appreciation of the royal tradition in which he was born, while providing our family with the space to focus on the next chapter, which includes the launch of our new charitable entity," they noted..
The unexpected announcement has been interpreted as the culmination of the couple's discomfort with their roles in the royal family and the constant harassment of the press, a situation that apparently has led to disagreements with other members of the royal family.
"We look forward to sharing the full details of this exciting next step in due course as we continue to collaborate with Her Majesty the Queen, the Prince of Wales, the Duke of Cambridge and all relevant parties," added the Dukes of Sussex in their message.
As of yet, there has been no pronouncement by other members of the Royal Family.
