With respect to wrinkles and sun spots, dark circles are probably one of the things that affects most and worries everyone. And, contrary to what many people think, they do not appear just for lack of sleep. Dr. Bertha Baum, dermatologist expert in laser medicine and cosmetic surgery, explains everything you have to know about this problem and how to definitively solve it.
What exactly are dark circles?
They are the color change in the periorbital area sometimes with accumulation of bags, depending on the case. The skin in that area is one of the thinnest in the body and therefore suffers more easily.
What causes its appearance?
This hyperpigmentation tends to be genetic in origin, but can also occur with age [due to] a lack of collagen and reduced skin elasticity. Also, lack of sleep can affect you in many ways, just like sleeping too much. [Likewise] when you accumulate fluids, the veins become larger and more marked. Allergies are also an important component. Dehydration from lack of water or heavy alcohol consumption, […] an unbalanced diet, smoking, thyroid problems or anemias can contribute.
What really works to combat them?
Retinoids help a lot because they help produce collagen, which facilitates the reduction of hyperpigmentation. Another tip is that if there is fluid accumulation you have to sleep on your back and with extra pillows so that the head is elevated. [Also] avoid excessive consumption of salt, which creates inflammation and fluid retention. I highly recommend products with Vitamin C, Kojic Acid, Azelaic Acid and Licorice Extract. And tricks like cold cucumber slices or tea bags (especially caffeinated) in warm water and then putting them in the fridge, help temporarily. The essential oils that work best in this area are lavender and geranium.
Any professional treatment?
I recommend a combination of color laser, pixelated laser for skin resurfacing and, if there is a lack of volume, a hyaluronic acid that does not absorb much water so that the area is rested.
